🌎 What is World Paintball Day?
World Paintball Day is more than just an excuse to grab your gear and head into the action — it’s a global celebration of a sport that’s been thrilling players for decades. The first recognized paintball game was played on June 27, 1981, in New Hampshire. A group of 12 friends used tree-marking pistols to test survival instincts, strategy, and good old-fashioned competitiveness.
One of those 12 trailblazers? Charles Gaines, a name well-known to many in Alabama — because he’s from right here in Birmingham! Gaines, a Truman Capote Award winning writer and outdoorsman, helped organize and participate in that first historic game, planting the seed for what would grow into the sport we love today. That connection gives Alabama a rightful place in the paintball legacy, and it’s a story we’re proud to honor every year.
